The Florida insurance license exam, explained

Florida licenses insurance agents through the Department of Financial Services, and unlike Texas it requires an approved pre-licensing course before you can sit the exam. Here is the path.

How to get licensed in Florida

  1. 1

    Complete an approved pre-licensing course

Florida requires a state-approved pre-licensing course for the 2-15 (Life, Health and Variable Annuities) and 2-20 (General Lines) licenses. Statewise is practice prep, not this course.

  2. 2

    Apply and get fingerprinted

Submit your license application to the Florida Department of Financial Services and complete the fingerprint and background-check requirement.

  3. 3

    Book the state exam

Schedule with Pearson VUE (about 44 USD per attempt). The 2-15 runs 165 questions in 2 hours 45 minutes; the 2-20 runs 165 scored questions in 3 hours 30 minutes.

  4. 4

    Pass with 70 percent

A passing score is valid for one year. Florida allows five attempts at the same exam type within twelve months, so arrive prepared.

  5. 5

    Receive your license

Once your application, prints and passing score are all in, the Department of Financial Services issues your license.
